ion-point was founded in 2019 by three former editorial directors who noticed the same pattern across different organizations: talented editors were burning out or leaving the profession because they couldn't access the training needed to navigate increasingly complex roles.

Traditional journalism schools taught writing and ethics. MBA programs taught business strategy but ignored editorial judgment. Nothing bridged that gap effectively.

Modern editorial workspace

What We Believe

Editorial work is professional work, and it deserves professional-grade development infrastructure. Not workshops that skim the surface. Not conferences that inspire but don't equip. Structured programs that build specific, applicable skills.

We believe editors shouldn't have to choose between editorial excellence and career advancement. The skills that make someone a strong editor — attention to detail, systems thinking, empathy for audience needs — are the same skills that make effective leaders. They just need deliberate cultivation.

Our Approach

Every program we design starts with research. We interview working editors, analyze job descriptions, and identify the gaps between what roles require and what training typically provides.

Then we build curricula around real scenarios. You won't find theoretical case studies here. Our exercises use actual editorial challenges: How do you prioritize when everything is urgent? How do you give feedback that improves work without demoralizing the writer? How do you measure content quality in ways that satisfy both creative and business stakeholders?

Who Teaches Our Programs

All instructors have held senior editorial positions at recognized publications or content organizations. They've managed teams, built editorial systems, and navigated the political complexity of cross-functional work.

More importantly, they can teach. We've learned that subject matter expertise alone doesn't translate to effective training. Our instructors go through extensive prep to ensure they can facilitate learning, not just lecture.

Results That Matter

Since launching, we've trained over 800 editorial professionals across publishing, digital media, corporate content teams, and agencies. Seventy-three percent of participants report being promoted or taking on expanded responsibilities within a year of completing a program.

But the metric that matters most to us is retention in the profession. Many participants tell us they were considering leaving editorial work before enrolling. Giving them tools to thrive — not just survive — keeps talented people in roles where they can make meaningful impact.

"I'd been managing a content team for two years but felt like I was making it up as I went. The Editorial Leadership program gave me frameworks I still use daily. I finally feel competent in the role."

— Olivia Richardson, Head of Content

Looking Ahead

The editorial profession will keep changing. AI tools are already transforming parts of content production. Audience expectations continue evolving. New platforms emerge constantly.

Our commitment is to stay ahead of those shifts, continually updating our programs to address emerging challenges while preserving the core skills that make editorial work valuable in the first place.

If you're an editor looking to grow your capabilities or an organization trying to develop your editorial team, we'd love to help.
